A comprehensive guide to Shanghai's ancient water town, featuring traditional Chinese architecture, winding canals, and delicious local snacks.
Qibao Old Street is a well-preserved ancient town located in Minhang District with over 1,000 years of history. It is one of Shanghai's most famous water towns, featuring traditional Chinese architecture, winding canals, stone bridges, and a wide variety of local snacks and handicrafts.
The name "Qibao" meaning "Seven Treasures" has an interesting origin. During the Five Dynasties period, King Qian Liu of Wuyue mistakenly heard "Liubao" (Six Treasures) instead of "Lubao" when visiting the local temple, and gifted a precious Lotus Sutra scroll, declaring "this is also a treasure." Thus the temple became "Qibao Temple." In 1008 AD, the Northern Song emperor officially named the area Qibao. Today, the narrow streets are lined with traditional shops selling handcrafted goods and local delicacies, coming alive at night with beautiful lanterns.
